Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main objective of the run?
The primary goal is to have a great time while taking in the sights and sounds of Redrun.
Within the storyline, your objective is to follow the path and uncover the truth behind what happened to the Missing as well as uncover the identity of the traitor. Along the way you’ll collect clues that will lead you to the location of the Missing and the source of the new outbreak. Once found, your team mission must cross the finish line with proof.
Is the run hard?
You have two course options:
3.33 miles – Beginner to moderate difficulty
6.66 miles – Moderate to advanced difficulty
Both courses feature hills and varied elevations. Many participants enjoy walking or hiking to fully take in the eerie atmosphere that Virginia City and Gold Hill have to offer. You’ll see landmarks and scenery you wouldn’t otherwise get to experience — so it’s worth slowing down instead of rushing through.
Which run is better — the 3.33 mile or the 6.66 mile?
Both runs are amazing experiences. You’ll enjoy Virginia City’s landscapes, haunted history, and stories along the way.
The 6.66 mile course incorporates a few must-see attractions you’ll remember forever — unique locations you won’t experience in any other setting.
What type of shoes do you recommend?
We highly recommend trail running shoes. Most of the course is off-road on trails and dirt roads, with areas of loose gravel and elevation changes. Trail shoes will give you the best footing and comfort.
Is this event timed?
Yes. Each team is timed as a whole, with the team captain’s time serving as the official measurement. We’ll track your time through the WebScorer app as well as at the finish line. All team members must cross the finish line before the clock stops.

You can also earn time bonuses for every flag your team turns in at the end of the run. Many participants hike or walk most of the course, then sprint through the Dead Zones where zombies lurk.
The fastest teams will be rewarded in a special ceremony at the AfterLife Party.
👉 Important: The team captain is GPS-tracked. We’ll know if your team takes shortcuts or ventures off course. Stay on the marked path to keep your time valid.
Do zombies tackle or grab runners?
No pushing, tackling, spitting, or any other kind of aggressive action is allowed. This is not a contact sport. The main role of the zombies is to create a creepy, immersive atmosphere within the living ghost town that is Virginia City. Our zombies fall into three categories:
👻 Scare Zombies – Atmosphere only, no touching.
🧟 Slow Zombies – In tight zones. They can grab flags but cannot touch runners.
⚡ Fast Zombies – They can chase you and grab flags, but only within designated Dead Zones.
Zombies are only allowed to go after runners’ flags in designated Dead Zones. Our Zone leaders carefully monitor all zombies and runners. Any type of hostile behavior from any Redrun participant will result in removal from the event.
If a competitor falls to the ground they are off limits to all creatures.
If you see someone fall, help them up.
Are there rules on how I can wear my flags?
Yes. Flags must be attached to the belts provided and worn on a runner’s sides. You don’t want Zombies grabbing you there, and they don’t want to grab you there either. Each team member must begin with flags.
What time should I check in?
🧟 What is check-in and what time should I check in?

Can we drink alcohol on the course?
Yes. We have multiple Revive Stations along the route where you can exchange pre-purchased drink tickets for beer, seltzers, water, or other beverages. No outside alcohol is allowed.
That said, we closely monitor participants. Anyone appearing intoxicated or over the limit will be removed from the course. Safety first.
Where can I redeem my drink wristband tabs?
Drink wristband tabs can be redeemed at the Revive Stations on the courses as well as the main Redrun beer truck on C Street. They are not accepted at any of the saloons around Virginia City. The bartenders will look at you like you’re crazy.
If you did not purchase a wristband when you registered, you can purchase one at the check-in. No cash is accepted on the courses. Water is provided for free.
What drinks can I get at the Revive Stations?
Your decontamination station bartenders will be serving up cold Coors Light, hard seltzers, and Liquid Death.
I registered as a Zombie. How do I know which Dead Zone I’ll be in?
Dead Zone and Scare Leaders will give you a rundown of each zombie location at the Zombie gathering at 11:30am the day of Redrun. There are Dead Zones where you can go after runners’ flags as well as Scare Zones where your mission is to terrify but not touch. We want you to be able to choose your spot. However, we must keep zombies spread out evenly between locations, and some locations only require a few zombies. If too many zombies pick the same place and you’re among them, we may ask you to change your zone. If your costume goes perfectly in a certain zone, we will also encourage you to go there.
As a Zombie, how do I get to my Zone?
The Zombie procession down C Street will end in a Zombie gathering out of sight from runners and crowds. Follow your Dead Zone Leader or Scare Leader and stay with them! We will immediately begin dispersing you to your locations. Most Dead Zone zombies will take a shuttle to their zones. If you miss it, you’re out of luck. For the rest of the zombies, it is a short walk to your spot.
Where do I get my zombie makeup done?
Zombie makeup by Body Paint Factory will take place upstairs at the Delta Saloon. Zombie makeup is from 9AM – 11:30AM upstairs in the Delta Saloon. Basic makeup is included with your registration. If you would like to pay for a makeup uprade, you can do so on-site with the Body Paint Factory team.
Will we get medals for finishing?
Yes. Anyone who finishes the course will receive a medal based on the distance you signed up for.
Is there an after party?
Yes! We’ll celebrate with awards for the best costumes, best times, and more. Afterward, enjoy a performance by local favorite cover band New Wave Crave.
The after party will begin around 4:00 PM at the Delta Saloon.
Anything I should bring?
You will get wet and you will get dirty. Consider bringing a towel and a change of clothes so you can enjoy the AfterLife Party post run.
We also highly suggest you bring your camera. You are going to see things that you will only see on this run. If you think you’ve seen Virginia City, think again. While you’re at it, be sure to tag #redrunvc.
Where should I park?
Parking is first-come, first-served in Virginia City. Do your best to arrive early and find a legal parking spot! We suggest the public parking lots on B and D Streets.
Are there age restrictions to register?
All Redrun runners and zombies must be 18 or older. Anyone under 18 who wants to participate must be accompanied by an adult at all times during the event.
Will I be running in and out of buildings?
Yes — and no. The course does run in and out of historic buildings throughout Virginia City. However, there will be no running inside the buildings you visit.
You’ll get to explore unique interiors and scenes, but safety and respect will be the rule in each location. If you do not follow the rules you will be removed from the race immediately.
Are we allowed to run inside any of the buildings?
No. Every building or structure you enter will be walk-only. Running is not permitted inside for the safety of participants and to protect these historic locations.
Will we see or visit the V&T train in action?
Yes. You’ll see many Virginia & Truckee train cars and will most likely see a train pass by.
⚠️ Important: You may not go on the train tracks or attempt to get on a train car (stationary or moving). Anyone caught doing so will be subject to prosecution. Stay clear of the tracks and simply enjoy the view.
